Review: Cyber Shadow
Nintendo Download: Cyber Shadow
Cyber Shadow looks like a true love letter to a time when games were challenging and intense. Its 8-bit pixelated art style harks back to long controller-clutching hours in front of a glowing CRT TV just to try one more time to beat that soul-crushing level. We’re excited to get our hands on it.
Get Ready to Dash and Slash Your Way Through Cyber Shadow
No matter how many years go by, it seems the 8-bit era of gaming never dies and Cyber Shadow is yet another testament to that. Published by Yacht Club Games, the minds behind Shovel Knight, this 2D side-scrolling pixel throwback is looking like proof that the gaming days of yore still have quite a bit of meat on their bones left.
Robo-Ninja Gaiden
The game is set in the distant future. Synthetic lifeforms have overrun the fictional urban streets of Mekacity, leaving death and destruction in their wake. You step into the shinobi grieves of Shadow, a cyborg ninja set out to rescue his clan. Your task is to stop the synthetics from harvesting your friends for their abilities which could prove to be catastrophic if they succeed. According to the developers, the story will be told both through in-game dialogue and cutscenes between missions, all in glorious handcrafted pixel art.
A Challenging Gauntlet
Cyber Shadow will be filled with all sorts of challenges. Hazardous level design will test your platforming skills. You’ll have to make use of every ability you gain to overcome the pitfalls and traps that await. Fans of classic games like Ninja Gaiden will feel right at home. As if that wasn’t enough, more than a dozen epic bosses that range from enormous war machines to other synthetic ninjas like yourself.
Choose Your Path
With all this talk of trials and tribulations worthy of a master shinobi, it’s clear that Cyber Shadow’s classic controller-slamming gaming influences run deep. That isn’t to say, however, that shinobi apprentices won’t get a chance to dip their toes in. From the game’s website, it’s clear that some difficulty settings will be adjustable to ease players who have yet to experience the joys of classic gaming.
Heart-Pounding Beats
Slashing and dashing through enemy-infested, hazardous levels wouldn’t be complete without a banging soundtrack. Produced by well-decorated composer Jake Kaufman, Cyber Shadow is set to have an adrenaline-pumping synthwave soundtrack that will really get people’s nostalgia going.
