The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in full-swing development. While there’s not much information to go by, Aonuma and his team are drawing new inspirations to make the darkest Zelda game yet.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Wants To Be Darker

As a receiver of multiple Game of the Year awards, Breath of the Wild was an incredibly well-received launch title for the Nintendo Switch. So much so that the big N is in full swing developing its sequel. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’s teaser trailer was shown off during E3 2019 and it looks to carry the same look and art style as its predecessor, albeit darker.

Information on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is scarce but that doesn’t mean we can’t analyse it, so let’s do so.

A Direct Follow-Up

According to lead designer, Eiji Aonuma, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will be a direct sequel of its predecessor, picking up where the story left off. He also confirmed that the story will be taking place in the same Hyrule we adventured in the Switch launch title. What he and his team are aiming for, however, is a darker feel. During interviews, Aonuma stated the game will be slightly darker than Majora’s Mask in tone and narrative. That is definitely saying something.

Unexpected Inspirations The original Breath of the Wild received a fair share of praise as well as criticism pertaining to its open-world map. For a lot of players, Hyrule felt empty and lifeless with not very much to do. Eiji Aonuma has stated that for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 his team are drawing inspiration from games like Red Dead Redemption 2. While what that means might be anyone’s guess, it does imply that other big open-world games will influence the upcoming Zelda game’s design. RDR2 was filled with stories and side missions that were well-crafted and nuanced. Let’s hope the same goes for Breath of the Wild 2.

Underground Excavations

We don’t know much about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’s story apart from what we saw in the trailer. Zelda and Link are seen exploring an old underground location with ancient cave art depicting what was likely a great battle. A corpse they discover begins to unfurl green and red energy which appears to make Hyrule castle float. We’ll have to wait and see for more information.
